End of season recognition night date change..

I was just notified that the junior high is NOT available Monday, March 8th after all. It is, however, available on Tuesday, March 9th. As far as I can tell, we have a couple options -- one is to move the entire thing to Tuesday night, the other is to find another location. I know a couple people had Monday night conflicts, but I'm pretty sure Tuesday night isn't good for some other people.. Any thoughts?

RE: home games tomorrow night

Jeanine,

I will help Susan during the first 45 minutes of the 14U game. I will be
back later for the 18U game but would like to just watch if that is
possible. I will check when I arrive to see what the need is.

Thanks,
Lucy

Re: home games tomorrow night

There will be concessions tonight at the admissions table.  All this really means is that it would be nice to have two people sitting there so one doesn't have to deal with both things.

I cannot be there until about 6:30 but my family will bring the cash bag and concessions by 5:45.  I need volunteers to attend the table for me.

RE: Season End Event

Whatever we do, let’s have the kids wear their uniforms so we can get team pictures.  Anyone have a good digital camera who could shoot them and email or post them to the web?

Please put Monday, March 8th on your calendars for an end-of-the-basketball season event...

We figured we'd stay with the "usual" basketball schedule, and do something between 6 and 9 pm, perhaps at the junior high... no decision yet on exactly what we are going to do. Anyone who is interested in planning/coordinating the event, please let me know!

End of Season tournament info

End of Season Tournament

DETAILS:

Who: 8 boys' teams, 7 girls' teams

What: double elimination tournament - everyone gets at least 2 games

When: March 5, 6

Where: Harrison, AR

How: drive 180 miles each way, stay over night somewhere, male and female adult chaperones/drivers

Why: because we love building character, skills, teamwork and competition

As we approach the end of our basketball season our girls' team has been a consistent winner especially against conference teams, and our boys are 3 & 3 in conference games, and two of those losses are against the same team (Whetstone) that is not planning to go to the conference tournament.

A recent change is that the entire tournament will be held in Harrison, Arkansas. That doesn't really affect our plans, because if we have a Friday game, we would be staying overnight anyway. This just means a longer single drive on Friday.

We are planning to take both boys and girls U18 teams. Now we just need to work on arrangements, since we know that some of the families cannot go along and that some of the players may have conflicts.

At this point, we need to know

#1 – which 18U (Varsity) players from each team (boys and girls) are going

#2 – which players will need to room with someone other than family

#3 – which parents/families are planning to go and need a room

#4 – which parents/families going would be able/willing to accommodate an extra player in their room

We will look into booking rooms as a group to get a discount rate.  We would like an adult in each room if possible, so we'd like as many parents as possible to go.

Please discuss this with your coaches, your family and others that it might affect, and let us know the answers to the above questions ASAP.

Thanks,

Dan & Dawn Hall

yet another change in the basketball schedule

I warned you to be flexible -- here we go!! (round 1)

We just received a call from West Plains, canceling all basketball games for Saturday, Feb 13th (boys and girls, against both teams)

Their reasons are two-fold --
  • their coach had a death in the family (so keep him in your prayers) and the earliest he could possibly get back is late Friday night -- he had already asked to cancel, but now there is also . . .
  • the weather - guess they have had a lot of ice and drifting snow that are making things pretty hazardous, and don't foresee it being much better by Saturday.
So...
We don't know if we are going to be able to reschedule these games. We've already used Saturday, Feb 20th, for a reschedule, and coach Hall is not available on the 27th -- these two teams are to far away to schedule on a weeknight. We'll let you know if we  do try to reschedule them.

At this point, this is what the rest of February looks like:
  • Thurs Feb 11th  6 - 8 pm Girls scrimmage SIR at Wyman
7 - 9 pm Boys practice at RJH (if we don't get bumped due to their rescheduling)
  • Sat Feb 13rd -- maybe we'll try to have some open gym time at Redeemer in the afternoon, if anyone is interested...
  • Mon Feb 15th  Boys game at Wellspring (Houston) 6 pm
Girls practice (scheduled at Redeemer 6-8, may move to RJH if they have school and don't need it)
  • Tues Feb 16th Boys home game vs. Maranatha 6 pm
  • Thurs Feb 18th -- practices at Rolla Junior High, girls 6 - 8; boys 7 - 9
  • Fri Feb 19th -- Home games vs. Camden Christian School at Mark Twain Elementary School
    • 14U boys at 5 pm
    • girls at 6:30 pm
    • 18U boys at 8:00 pm
  • Sat Feb 20th -- games at Lebanon -- afternoon -- exact times still being negotiated (I've requested a 2:30 start, but we may have to start at 1 pm)
  • Mon Feb 22nd -- Home Games vs. Lebanon
Thanks for your flexibility. To quote one of our RHAA moms -- "Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape!"

Dawn Hall
RHAA secretary

RE: end of season questions

Believe it not, we are nearing the end of the basketball season. Weather permitting, we have a very full next couple of weeks, but then we will be done ;)  In the meantime, I'm sure we'll have to be very flexible in the next couple weeks, since others have also had to reschedule games due to weather.

A few things we'd like your input on:

#1 -- pictures. We did not have enough interest expressed at the beginning of the season to justify scheduling a photographer. However, the girls did, I think have a team picture and individual pictures taken by the Hamiltons, and we can ask them to do the boys as well if there is interest.  I’d love to see the boys get pictures.  Seems an important thing to be able to look back upon years later.

#2 -- End of year tournament -- the girls team is almost definitely going; Coach Hall wants to see how we did against Lebanon and the teams on Saturday before making any final decisions. If you haven't already given feedback on going, please do so right away.  I’d be inclined toward a tournament of some kind but am easy on this one – can be peaceful either way.

#3 -- End of year celebration/recognition -- Allison Bruno has volunteered to help organize this. Anyone else who wants to work with her, please let us know. We're thinking a family potluck at a church, but we could also do something like that at the cafeteria in the junior high if we also want to do basketball games for boys vs. dads, etc. Please let us know what your family would be interested in doing.  A nice thing to do.  Not a ‘have to’.

CHANGE for tonight, Monday, Feb 8th -- hopefully FINAL

First of all, we apologize for all the last minute changes.

We received word late this morning that the junior high is available, after all, and it has taken some time to communicate with opponents and coaches to determine what is going to happen tonight.

1st
  •  there will be no boys game. Our opponent had already communicated the cancellation of the game to their families and are uncertain of the weather anyway, so we are just going to cancel and try to reschedule.
2nd
  • Both practices will be at the junior high, according to the "usual" schedule when at the junior high facility
    • Girls 6 - 8 pm
    • Boys 7 - 9 pm
Finally, there is always the possibility that weather may force cancellation later this afternoon. Right now, in Rolla, it doesn't look like it is going to be a problem. There is light snow, but nothing is sticking to the roads. However, we know it may be worse where you are coming from, and as always, the final decision is up to you.

Please don't leave home for practice without checking your email or voice mail for any last minute cancellations, especially if you have a significant drive.

Review:
  • No boys game tonight
  • Practices at Rolla Junior High tonight
  • Girls 6 - 8, Boys 7 - 9
Thanks again for your patience! Don't hesitate to call or email if you need clarification.

Monday 2/8 CHANGE

We cannot use the junior high at all tomorrow night, so the plan is to have girls practice tomorrow at Redeemer from 4-6 pm.

Of course, we know the forecast calls for a lot of snow tonight/tomorrow morning, so we will monitor that situation and cancel if necessary.

Subject: Games tonight are OFF

Thank you to all of you who have given input in the last few hours. We have decided to cancel games for tonight!

Dan and I just went out for a drive and it is apparent that it is starting to accumulate on the side roads, although the main roads seem to be clear, though wet.  Although its possible that many of you would be okay going to the game tonight, we feel it is better to err on the side of caution and safety. After all, it is only basketball :) (Dan said what?! How can you say "it's only basketball") We will definitely try to reschedule.

The situation is also getting complicated as some of the people who were planning to drive and take people have decided they'd rather not go.  So, throw another log on the fireplace, stay home and enjoy your families tonight!

Dan and I are still going to be on the road, going to Kansas City for business meetings this weekend. We have a four-wheel drive, and will be leaving soon, hoping to do most of the drive in daylight hours. But we'd appreciate your prayers. Also, our daughter Becky is on the way home from Kirksville for the weekend, so appreciate your prayers for her!

Finally, a heads-up -- we've been bumped from the junior high gym on Monday night (rescheduling games that were scheduled for tonight), so we are going to have to find another facility for the boys game or reschedule...and same with the girls for practice. We will be working on that this weekend, but may not know until Monday morning what the plan is.

Have a wonderful weekend. Sorry for the uncertainty!
Dawn

As of right now, 11:15 am, the games in Lebanon tonight are on. We will make a final decision by 2:30, 3:00 pm at the very latest. Please check for an email from us after then with a final decision.
  • #1 we have not received notice of cancellation from Lebanon
  • #2 the weather forecast shows temperature and conditions staying fairly consistent throughout the afternoon and into the evening, which means roads will remain wet but clear.Temperatures are not expected to drop at all when darkness hits.
We are not insensitive to the fact that many of you live out in the country, not on main roads. We are open to input from you before we make the final decision. We'd especially like to hear from you if you are out on the roads in the next several hours.
Thanks!

RE: Games tonight

Heard from my father at Fort Leonard Wood, who said it's really coming down
over there. He said he'd be very surprised if they didn't cancel.

It's not bad here in Edgar Springs yet -- we live on a dirt road, and it IS
snowing heavily, but it's largely still melting when it hits.

My father will be driving Colin, if the game's on, but he'll be going
straight from Edgar Springs through the Fort to Lebanon so we can't pick
folks up in Rolla. Sorry we're no help with transportation this time...

Dawn,

MODOT is showing the roads partly covered in the Lebanon area, and
looking at the radar the bulk of the snowfall hasn't hit there yet. We
will go if the games are on, but we should look at modot.gov road
conditions maps before making any final decisions.

OOPS. Thank you, Karvel, but I just realized Stephen would only be
playing with the 18 and under team. Noel would need to be there for both
the 14U and 18U games. Thank you for the offer. If needed, could Noel
ride back with you?

Thanks,

I will be leaving Rolla at about 6:30 pm with Stephen. I could take Noel.

I just received confirmation that our games in Lebanon on Friday will begin at 6 pm and will be played at the Cowan Civic Center, which is now a YMCA, I believe. that means girls will play at about 7 pm, and 18U boys about 8:15.

Directions are attached, especially for those who have never been there. This is the place we've been playing in Lebanon for the past several years, so most of you will be familiar with it.

Directions to Cowan Civic Center (YMCA)  Lebanon

Interstate 44 to Lebanon. Take the first Lebanon exit – I think it is Business 44 as well as Old Route 66 and Mill Creek Road.

Turn right at the end of the off-ramp. Take that road, which veers to the left after a bit. After not too far, The Cowan Civic Center will be on your left. You enter the parking lot before you actually get to the building, and drive around to the back of the building to park. That is where the main entrance is.

Welcome to February - basketball different almost every time!

Welcome to February - the month of a different place/time for almost every practice. I'll try to send reminders out and to keep the online calendar up-to-date and accurate, but just know it is likely to be unusual, so check your calendars, and feel free to call if you aren't sure.

BOYS practice today(Monday) is at Mark Twain Elementary from 4 - 5:30 pm (I apologize for the error in the WHERE line on the online calendar - I just fixed it.

GIRLS practice today (Monday) is at Redeemer Lutheran from 6 - 8 pm.

Thursday practices are scheduled at the high school; Girls 6 - 7:30 and Guys 7:30 - 9. I will send confirmation of that on High School (their schedule is more subject to change, and with recent weather, there is always a chance we will get bumped for a re-scheduled ball game)

Friday -- games at Lebanon -- 14U Boys at 6 pm, followed by 18U Girls and then 18U Boys. Please talk amongst yourselves about rides -- if you can drive and take people, let that be known; ask around if you need a ride. We suggest meeting at Kroger at 4:30 for the younger group, girls could leave at 5:30 pm.
  • Mr. Hall and Zeke will need a ride to the game; Zeke only will need a ride home after the 18U game. If anyone can help us out with this, please let us know. Thanks!

Rolla schools are dismissing early, so we cannot use the gym. Therefore, practice tonight has been canceled.

I am not available this afternoon to come up with an alternate plan, and it is probably wisest to just leave it as is.

I'll be leaving with the 3:30 gang from Kroger's and driving our Excursion.
It seats 11 -- 2 of those are my son and I, so I can take 9 others.

We'll be leaving after the JV game (not staying through the Varsity) and can
take anyone from the JV team back who's not staying.

Paul Hammacher will be there for the Varsity game with his big van -- it
seats 11 or 12 (or more?), so he'll be able to take back any folks we
brought down who are still there.

That should cover quite a few folks. See you all soon!

RE: travel plans tonight

Dawn et al,

Initially, we were planning on driving the mini-van with some family members to arrive in time (7:00 ish) for the varsity game; however, if the need still exists to take people earlier (3:30 at Kroger), then we can go earlier and take the larger van, not to worry.

Just let us know how many we need to take, which, in turn, will decide the vehicle we drive.  Thanks again for coordinating all the efforts.

Pax Christi,

Paul

If we have not heard from you, please let us know your travel plans for the game tonight.

We have several players who need rides, and at this point, don't have enough seatbelts for everyone at the time they need to go.

We (the Halls) had been planning to go as a family, but if need be, we can leave some home or take two cars --- but before we do that, we need to hear if anyone else has a vehicle going with space for riders, and what time you are leaving. It would also help to know if you are planning to stay for all 3 games.

Thanks for responding as soon as you are able, even if you aren't sure of your plans!

Gameday T-shirts

Well, we are now completed our first year experiment of hosting "tournaments" here in Rolla. A big thank you to all of you who helped in some way, especially today, since you pitched in with no prior notice :)

The St. Louis Patriettes and the SWMO Lady Eagles were here today, and from the little that I was able to see, it looked like we had 3 pretty good games. We lost to both teams, but we gave both of them a good game.

We'd welcome any input you may have on doing these events again next year, positive or negative. We want to learn from this experience and do better next year. We do know that both the St. Louis and Springfield teams appreciated the opportunity and are likely to come again if we host next year.

One thing that worked out pretty well was our t-shirts -- we purposely designed them so we could use the same shirt for both the boys and the girls, and ordered plenty extra for the boys tournament. Not many extra were sold, so we had 36 left over, and with only 2 teams coming today, decided to wait to order any more t-shirts. We came out pretty close to having just enough -- we were able to give the opposing team players shirts that worked for them, and were just a few short to give our girls.

I will be ordering shirts on Monday for those players who did not get them. Any parents or siblings who are interested in a gameday shirt, we will sell them to you at our cost, which will be $8 or so.. We also have 5 youth 10-12 shirts we will sell at the same cost. (the logo is attached if you want to see it)

Please let me know what size shirt you need, girls who didn't get one, and anyone else who wants to buy one, send me the size you want.

Saturday basketball schedule

The final schedule for Saturday, Jan 23rd:
All games will be played at Rolla Junior High.

12:30 pm -- RHAA vs. Patriettes
2:00 pm -- SWMO Eagles vs. Patriettes
3:30 pm -- SWMO Eagles vs. RHAA

The gym will be in use by the Optimist Girls' basketball program in the morning. They should be wrapping up by noon, but don't be surprised if you see an unfamiliar group there as you arrive.

My sincere apologies that this was not sent out sooner.

rides tonight

If you haven't already let us know your plans for tonight, please do so ASAP. Some of the people who usually drive are not able to drive tonight, and we want to be sure everyone is accounted for (just for our peace of mind, girls let us know your plans, too.)

Thanks.

Corrected directions to Mansfield, other thoughts on driving

I left an important word (right) off in the previous email -- please use these directions:

Directions to Mansfield Community Center

205 North Missouri Avenue

Mansfield, MO

South of Rolla on US-63 to Cabool (62.3 miles)

When you reach Cabool, take US-60 Business West for 3 miles

Then continue on US-60 for 25 miles to Mansfield

Turn left at US 60- Business West in Mansfield

Take the first right onto W. Jennifer Street

Turn left at North Lincoln St.

Take the first right onto Ohio Street

Take the 2nd left onto North Missouri Avenue. The Community Center will be on the right.

Additional thoughts:

Google Maps actually suggests a route taking I-44 to Lebanon and then south on Mo-5. We have heard that 5 is very windy and dangerous, and feel that US 63 is a better alternative for most of us. Those of you who live north of the interstate may want to consider that route.

Also, those of you who live in Salem and other areas south of Rolla should try to carpool without coming to Rolla. Perhaps we could set up a meeting place in Licking. If we can help coordinate any arrangements, let us know.
